Introduction

At one of the lowest price points within the latest ereader lineup comes the Aluratek Libre. Using similar technology, including digital music players, digital photo frames and 3G wireless routers at mid-grade price points, Aluratek has taken this technology and created a small family of ereaders which are worth considering.

Appearance and feel rating: 86/100

ERead All About it

Holding the eBook Reader Pro AEBK01FS, feels very good in the hand. The display transitions well to either landscape or portrait options at the flick of a button. What's unique about this ereader is that it utilizes several different buttons on the handheld to achieve functions such as page advance. At first, it seemed that this was overkill. However, after testing the AEBK01FS's functionality, they seemed to really get it right. Users can choose. Overtime, it's likely that habits would form, but having the different options is very comforting. For newbies to technology, this is an added plus.

While the Aluratek ereader device comes in black and white colors, the black is a charcoal matte, which is preferable to the white color, which looks a bit dingy (and that's before typical use!). All of the buttons on eBook Reader Pro device are located around the ereader display, which makes sorting through user preferences quickly and easily. In our ereader review, we found that the navigation buttons were well thought out, especially for the recent technology convert who wants to have a library of ebooks at their disposal, yet also attractive enough for the average technology user to have in their digital arsenal. The menu display is also neat because users may select a number on the right hand side of the device or choose to use the touch screen to move in and out of menu subsets. We scored the Aluratek AEBK01FS display as high as we did simply because the navigation is so intuitive, especially for the non-tech savvy user, which outstripped negative marks for a less than modern aesthetic, which is all the trend right now for ereaders.

Ereader e-paper or eInk Legibility Rating: 95/100

Aluratek's ereader line touts its epaper LCD technology and with good reason. The reading ‘feel' for this ereader is quite natural. They claim that their epaper technology makes it difficult to determine the difference between an actual paperback read and their e-paper screen and, I'd have to agree. Despite the fact that the Aluratek ereader uses a LCD display, reading in sunshine is possible, because it is not backlit, which causes all of the reading issues. In intense direct sunlight, I'd imagine reading ability would diminish, although we didn't have the opportunity to test for this. Night reading will require a light of some sort.

Page advance and page reverse on this ereader is natural. Using either the buttons on the bottom left of the device or the bar on the left side, page turns happen quickly and smoothly. Users can also skim their finger across the page. The electronic screen skimming feels as if you have a real book in your hand in the way the pages appear in front of you. Our review of font size adjustments is available through a button on the bottom right of the device, which is very intuitive and simple on the AEBK01FS ereader.

Compatability rating: 82/100

Some of the digital features the Aluratek ereader offers and does will is its bookmarking function. It keeps you in place with each of the books you are currently reading, which is handy for the user who reads several books concurrently. ePub (Adobe DRM protected/ non-DRM), PDF (Adobe DRM protected/ non-DRM), TXT, RTF, FB2, MOBI (non-DRM only) and PRC (non-DRM only) are all readable ebook formats for the Aluratek Libre. The open compatability software is an attractive feature, particularly if you're familiar with computers, because you can download free books ranging from online ebook sites to your local library. This is such an attractive feature that we've mentioned this in other reviews.

A unique feature among ereaders and something that more likely can be found in tablets is that the Aluratek Libre also supports BMP, JPG, GIF and animated GIF picture formats. This means that you can use your own pictures for your screen saver mode and also store pictures for viewing. A built-in dictionary is also available which is uncommon for a cheap ereader.

Aluratek's Libre ereader has a memory expansion up to 32GB via SD memory card. This means that once you download a bunch of book titles, in theory you could have several libraries worth of material in each SD card. This might be very attractive to the law student – Sony's Touch Edition Reader PRS-650 ereader and the Velocity Micro Cruz Reader and Velocity Micro Cruz Tablet ereader devices also have the 32 GB memory expansion, although these products are considerably more expensive.

Connect the Libre ereader to any computer with an internet connection using a USB connection for easy access to the most recent ebooks, as well as access to free timeless classics. The fact that it's not wireless and thus avoids the RF frequency concerns, this is a solid ereader to consider for young students. The Libre AEBK01FS ereader can use the open format mentioned above or the Borders eBook App. 100 classic titles come pre-loaded onto the ereader. They include: 20000 Leagues Under the Seas, A Hundred Fables of LaFontaine, A Tale of Two Cities, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Aesop's Fables, Alices Adventures in Wonderland, At the Back of the North Wind, Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini, Beowulf, Collected Works of Poe volume 1, Collected Works of Poe volume 2, Collected Works of Poe volume 3, Collected Works of Poe volume 4, Collected Works of Poe volume 5, Common Sense, Cyrano de Bergerac English, Don Quixote, Dracula, Emile, Father Goriot, Frankenstein, Gargantua and Pantagruel, Great Expectations, Green Mansions, Growth of the Soil, Gulliver's Travels, Hamlet, Heart of Darkness, Hedda Gabler, Household Tales, How to Live on 24 Hours a Day, Ivanhoe, Jacob's Room, King Arthur and His Knights, Leaves of Grass, Les Miserables, Little Women, Madame Bovary, Martin Eden, Meditations, Metamorphosis, Middlemarch, Moby Dick, Mother, News from Nowhere, Oliver Twist, Plutarch's Lives, Pride and Prejudice, Pygmalion, Renascence and Other Poems, Robinson Crusoe, Romeo and Juliet, Siddhartha, Songs of Innocence and Experience, SwannsWay, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Aeneid of Virgil, The Age of Reason, The Arabian Nights, The Art of War, The Awakening and Other Short Stories, The Bible King James version, The Brothers Karamazov, The Call of the Wild, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Crock of Gold, The Curious Case of Benjamin, The Divine Comedy, The Grammar of English Grammer, The History of Tom Jones, The Iliad, The League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, The Lives of the Twelve Caesars, The Merry Adventures of Robinhood, The Mystery of the Sycamore, The Nibelungenlied, The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Precipice, The Republic, The Scarlet Letter, The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Secret Garden, The Sorrows of Young Werther, The Three Musketeers, The Time Machine, The Tragedy of the Korosko, The Trial, The Way of All Flesh, The Wind in the Willows, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Thus Spake Zarathustra, Utopia, Walden, War and Peace, Wuthering Heights.

Battery Life Rating: 77/100

Stay Close to an Outlet

A main drawback to the Aluratek Libre eBook Reader Pro ereader device is that the batter life lasts up to 24 hours of continuous use, although we anticipate fewer hours of actual reading time because of the way users will turn on and off the ereader. An auto off feature does come in handy, but it still take battery life to make this happen. We'd estimate that a user could keep reading a digital book for 2 to 3 days between charging, but not as long as the two weeks Aluratek promotes for its Libre ebook reader. If you are a traveling professional who wants several ebooks at their fingertips while on the road, the AEBK01FS ereader is probably not for you.

Value rating: 87/100

Currently the Aluratek Libre eBook Ereader Pro ereader can be found for under $120, which makes it a cheap ereader, especially when comparing all of its features to more expensive ereaders on the market. It also feels durable, especially when compared to other ereading devices, which is a good thing for the Young Student who might enjoy this device.

Overall rating: 84/100

If you are a ultra-modern technology type of person, this is probably not for you. But you already knew that. The Aluratek Libre eBook Reader Pro is for the avid reader who wants to focus on reading books with this device. If a user is new to technology and also would enjoy the ability of listening to music in the background while reading, then this product is right up your ereader alley.
